FAKE NEWS ALERT: INEC hasn’t fixed date for CVR resumption, says Oyekanmi

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has not announced a date for the resumption of continuous voter registration (CVR).

The commission added that it has also not decided on a date for the transfer and replacement of lost permanent voter cards (PVCs).

A report had claimed that the electoral commission has scheduled May 27 for the resumption of CVR and other related services.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Rotimi Oyekanmi, chief press secretary to Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said the report is false.
Oyekanmi urged the public to disregard the “fake and anonymous statement”.

“In line with its tradition, the Commission will publicly announce the date for the resumption of the CVR at the appropriate time, the full details of which will also be shared via our official social media platforms,” the statement reads.

The electoral umpire is seeking a law to allow voters to cast ballots without PVCs.

In 2024, Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, proposed the use of computer-generated slips for voter accreditation during elections.

Yakubu said with the introduction of the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS), the use of PVC as the sole means of identification for voter accreditation on election day should be reviewed.

Last month, Oyekanmi said the law has to be amended to allow other means of identification to be considered for voting purposes.

TAGGED: CVR, INEC
