Ohanaeze Ndigbo, one socio-cultural organisation, claim sey over 1.3 million Nigerians dey Indian prisons.

Okechukwu Isiguzoro, di organization secretary-general, make di claim for statement wey dey welcome Narendra Modi, prime minister of India, to Nigeria.

Quoting “confam intelligence”, Isiguzoro tok sey di nomba for India na di highest nomba of Nigerian prisoners globally.

Isiguzoro accuse di Indian authorities of detaining innocent Nigerians without reason and im tol sey make di urged Modi and President Bola Tinubu discuss di topic as mata of urgency.

“We dey beg di President make im chuk mouth for dia release and potential state pardon as humanitarian favour wey go reflect our shared values and commitment to justice,” na so im tok.

Isiguzoro tok sey dem bin make di call to protect di rights of pipu wey be victims of systemic challenges and racism – tins wey dey common wit di immigration experience.

NA 1.3m NIGERIANS DEY INDIAN PRISONS?

To confam di claim, TheCable check di National Prisons Information Portal (NPIP), initiative of di Indian govment wey dey calculate and show all di l activities wey consign prison and prisoner management for every jail across di kontri.

According to di website, dem dey update di dashboard every four hours to present accurate informate. Data from di portal show how many inmates dey all di prisons.

TheCable check all di nombas for all di states and we see sey Nigerians dey jail inside 25 states out of 28.

As of November 20, di portal show sey na total of 526,569 inmates dey all di prisons. Inside dis nomba, Nigerians bin get 1,933.

Manipur bin get di highest nomba of imprisoned Nigerians at 1,009 while states like Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Puducherry bin get di smallest wit one inmate each. Di total dey slightly increased from di 1,100 Nigerians wey bin dey serve different jail terms in 2015, according to Ajjampur Ghanashyam, then-Indian high commissioner in Nigeria.
