Some social media users have circulated a video showing individuals affiliated with the secessionist Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) setting a tanker and other vehicles on fire.
The video was purportedly shot in Abia state.
In the video, the individuals called for a sit-at-home order, adding that there will be no peace until Biafra is created.
“Okigwe, Abia state this morning. Try and stay safe,” a now-deleted tweet read on Monday.
The tweet gathered over 136.5k views.
In a repost, another social media user warned residents of the south-east not to walk aimlessly, adding that the region is “chaotic.”
The tweet has also been deleted but gathered 14.6k views when it was made.
OLD VIDEO FROM 2022
Okoye Henry, Imo police spokesperson, debunked the viral posts in a statement on Tuesday.
“The Imo State Police Command is issuing this statement in response to a recent viral video showing vehicles set ablaze by individuals affiliated with IPOB/ESN enforcing unlawful sit-at-home order in Okigwe on 21/10/2024,” the statement reads.
“The Command confirms that this video is misleading; the incident depicted actually occurred in 2022. Its recirculation is a calculated attempt by mischief makers to instill unnecessary fear and anxiety in the State.”
Henry warned against the spread of mischief and misinformation, emphasising that such actions are harmful and punishable by law.
“Any individuals found guilty of false information will be prosecuted,” the police spokesperson said.
Okoye said the police remain committed to ensuring a safe environment for residents.
