FACT CHECK: Viral video of Trump calling for Nnamdi Kanu’s release is doctored

A Facebook page — Republicans for United States of Biafra — has posted a video created with the aid of an artificial intelligence in which US President Donald Trump was purportedly calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

The page with over 2,700 followers posted the video on February 19.

The video has gained over 20,000 views, 200 shares, and 40 comments since it was posted.

In the less than one-minute video, a figure looking like Trump could be heard saying he will free Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), from the custody of the Nigerian government.

Trump also purportedly said his administration will make sure “Biafra people” are allowed to conduct a referendum.

The page was created in April 2020 to share and promote contents that support secessionists’ views.

On February 18, the page shared an AI-generated video showing Trump supporting succession agitations in Nigeria.

VERIFICATION

A close observation of the video shows that the image of Trump was digitally manipulated to appear that the US president was delivering the speech.

The mouth region was blurry, and it appeared that the image had been superimposed on another image to depict Trump speaking.

CableCheck discovered that the video was created using a website that allows users to create AI videos using the images of some popular celebrities.

The website allows users to create AI videos using the images of Trump, Elon Musk, billionaire tech entrepreneur, former US President Barack Obama, Kanye West, US rapper, among others.

A feature on the website also allows users to insert the words they want in the video.

VERDICT

The video showing Trump calling for the release of Kanu is AI-generated.
