A video showing Aliko Dangote, chairman of the Dangote Group, saying he has launched an investment scheme “designed to help Nigerians grow their wealth” is trending online.
In the two-minute video, Dangote was shown purportedly endorsing the investment programme — without a name, and urging Nigerians aged 30 and above to invest.
The video was captioned “My financial project for the people of Nigeria”.
“This year, you can participate in an official programme designed to help Nigerians secure and grow their wealth. Thousands of families across the country are already seeing the difference this initiative can make,” Dangote purportedly said.
“Let me be clear, if you join this programme today you can earn up to N2.66 million in just the first week. This is not a dream, it’s real, verifiable and backed by a system designed for your success.
“Here’s how it works: you make a minimum investment of N380,000 and you start earning daily returns automatically.”
VERIFICATION
Findings by CableCheck revealed that no credible newspaper reported the purported launch of the investment programme, which would have been a major news story if credible.
Further checks showed that the video was edited to appear as if Dangote was talking about the investment scheme.
An observation of the mouth region depicts that there was an imposition.
Analysis of key frames from the video showed that it was derived from an interview Dangote granted on October 28 at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Dangote wore the same attire, and the backdrops matched. Dangote’s speech in the viral video was altered and did not align with his remarks in the original footage, showing the video was doctored.
Reacting to the viral clip on Tuesday, Anthony Chiejina, the Dangote Group spokesperson, debunked the purported investment video.
Denying that Dangote made the statements in the video, he said: “It’s a deep fake.”
