Above is the content of the WhatsApp post.

When the link is been clicked on, it takes one to a page thanking and congratulating the person and stating that he/she is qualified but must send the link to 12 groups and friends on WhatsApp to benefit from the offer too. After sending the link to different groups and friends on WhatsApp, one will be asked to fill his/her personal details for either marketing or malicious purpose.

Verification

In an attempt to reveal if the post is a genuine one, a search was conducted on Davido’s social media handles and nothing of such was found. It was discovered on his Twitter page that he gave free airtime on 13th April 2022 to the first 2000 people to log on to udux.com to listen to him sing Asa’s song and vice versa. Udux is a music store and a streaming service platform.

TheCable reach reached out to Obioha Ogbonna an Msc cyber security candidate at California State University, Dominguez Hills, he confirmed that the links are phishing sites. According to his statement, this kind of attacks fall under Social Engineering, it relies heavily on human needs and often involves manipulating people into giving out their personal information, he also listed things to look out for in a link to easily detect that it’s fake and wants to be used to defraud people.
First, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. There are barely any “freebies” online.
Second, look out for typos, you will find a couple of them.
Third, look out for link alterations example someone could put www.jumia.com as www.jum1a.com (notice the difference)
Fourth, avoid bit.ly links as much as possible and only open them from trusted people for genuine reasons and not for “giveaways”.
Finally, avoid putting your personal information anywhere, you might think it’s harmless but your information could be used for identity theft or worse off, be target for spear phishing attacks.

Verdict

The claim that Davido is giving out free 5k airtime voucher and 10GB data to celebrate his uncle Adeleke’s win is false.

TAGGED: Adeleke Ademola, Davido, Obioha Ogbonna
