FACT CHECK: Photos alleging disruption of Edo election are from 2019, 2023 polls

A viral X post claims that thugs have disrupted the governorship election in Edo state.

Three images were shared in the X post on Saturday in the thick of the much-anticipated election.

Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olumde Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) are the frontrunners in the governorship race.

The images show ballot boxes and papers scattered on the ground while election materials and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were also captured in the frames.

The photos, which were posted by @Awkaboy001, have so far garnered over 5,000 views, 21 reposts and 31 likes.

“APC rented thugs disrupting elections in Benin, Edo state,” the X post was captioned.

The governorship election, which features 17 candidates, has been marred by reports of vote buying in some polling units.

VERIFYING THE POST

To verify the claim, TheCable subjected the photos to a Google image search and found that the first and third images were from the 2019 general election.

The search further revealed that the second image was from the 2023 election — specifically at the Oba Elegushi polling unit in Lagos state.

VERDICT

The images suggesting that APC thugs disrupted the election in Edo state are old.

The pictures were from past elections.

TAGGED: 2019 elections, 2023 elections, Edo election, fake news, old pictures
