FACT CHECK: Has Oyo state been divided into two?

A TikTok user has claimed that the bill seeking to divide Oyo state into two has been passed into law.

 In a one-minute, 35-second video, the TikTok account —  @Eddieblisshotline — said a new state has been created from Oyo.

The video has garnered over 46.9K likes, 3,735 comments, and 6,139 shares on TikTok.

The TikTok user also said Ibadan, which is the capital of Oyo state, will now stand as a state with another capital — Ibadan town.

She urged the residents to ascertain which state they would join following the creation of the new one.

“Breaking News, Oyo state has been divided into two. You know normally we have Ibadan and Oyo, with Ibadan as the capital. Now they are saying Oyo will remain the state while Oyo town will be the capital,” she said.

“Now the same goes for Ibadan, which is the original capital of Oyo state will now be a state on its own, with Ibadan town as its capital, and it has been passed into law.”

The claim was also seen on Instagram and Facebook.

HAS ANOTHER STATE BEEN CREATED FROM OYO STATE?

On October 22, a bill seeking to create a new state from Oyo passed its second reading in the house of representatives.

The bill sponsored by Akeem Adeyemi, member representing Oyo federal constituency, seek to alter the 1999 constitution through the creation of the new state.

Adeyemi said the creation of the new state became imperative due to the landmass of the state, which he described as the largest in the south-west, with 33 LGA and a population of 5,580,894 people (2006 census).

For a bill to become a law, it must have passed through three readings in both the senate and house of representatives, with public hearing from concerned parties before it can be passed or rejected. 

Once all these criteria are met, the bill is then sent to the president for accent.

VERDICT

The claim that a new state has been created from Oyo state is false.
