INEC collation centre for 2020 Edo governorship election

Social media users have claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won Saturday’s governorship election in Edo state.

The election features 17 candidates — but Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olumde Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) are the major contenders.

“Asue Ighodalo Is Coming!” a tweet from @jrnaib2 read, referencing a screenshot of a Premium Times report.

So far, the tweet has amassed over 30,000 views, 331 likes, 73 reposts, and 12 bookmarks.

Another social media user also shared the screenshot, describing it as the “latest result” in the state.

The screenshot has also been widely shared in various WhatsApp groups.

VERIFICATION

Data from the results portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that only 93 percent of results have been uploaded.

A further search through Premium Times’ archives showed that the result was from Edo state’s 2020 gubernatorial election.

Godwin Obaseki, the current governor of the state, was declared the winner of the 2020 election.

Premium Times has also issued a disclaimer saying the results are not recent as INEC has yet to compute the total votes.

VERDICT

Claims that the PDP has won Edo’s 2024 governorship elections are false. The referenced post is a 2020 report.
