On June 14, a Twitter account operating with the name of Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour party, as a bundle of integrity.

The Twitter account, which often reposts news stories about the former president, had about 5,000 followers when the tweet about Obi was posted. The followership is almost 10,000 currently.

“He is not a saint but among politicians in Nigeria today, Peter Obi is a bundle of integrity,” the post, which is accompanied with a picture of both politicians, read.

The tweet has generated more than 33,000 likes, over 8,000 retweets and 900 comments.

Some social media users who engaged the post believed it was from Obasanjo and also commended the “validation of Obi by the former president.”

Festus Agene, a Twitter user, said it is “a good validation from Baba OBJ.”

Dave Saint, another user, said, “Integrity is a scarce/missing attribute in the life of today’s politicians, yet a man like PO [Peter Obi] possess it in abundant and anywhere belle face social media influencers with dead conscience are marketing rogues to Nigerians for 2023, God forbid bad thing. Thanks Olusegun Obasanjo for your kind words to PO.”

VERIFICATION

An online search shows no credible media platform published the statement credited to the former president.

When contacted by TheCable, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s spokesman, dismissed the claim, saying the former president did not utter such statement.

He said Obasanjo does not operate any Twitter account and in fact, he does not have any social media account.

VERDICT

The social media post claiming Obasanjo endorsed Peter Obi is fake.

The post emanated from a parody account.
