FACT CHECK: Did Nigeria deploy peace support mission to Israel?

A Facebook video purports that Nigeria deployed troops for a joint peace support mission in Israel.

A male broadcaster reporting for an outlet identified as TBC News claimed in the 30-second video.

“Nigeria is proud to extend its strategic defence training to key global allies,” a soundbite showing a military personnel played.

“This is a friendship mission not combat.

“The troops will participate in a solidarity programme designed to enhance global cooperation and international alliance.”

The male broadcaster said international observers praised the initiative, calling it a symbol of African leadership in global defence collaboration.

The broadcaster dated the report Tuesday, June 17th.

At the time of this report, the video has gathered 3.2k likes, 506 shares, and 465 comments.

The video comes at a time when tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated, with the conflict entering its second week.

Nations, including Nigeria, and global leaders have shown concern and urged restraint.

But did Nigeria intervene by sending a joint peace support mission to Israel?

VERIFICATION

CableCheck conducted keyword searches of the said deployment on search engines and did not find any corroborating reports.

The presidency, ministry of defence, and the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) did not issue a statement regarding the purported deployment.

CableCheck contacted Edward Buba, DHQ spokesperson, for confirmation, but Buba did not respond.

No credible media platforms reported on the matter either.

CableCheck also observed discrepancies, similar to those caused by artificial intelligence (AI) interference, in the broadcaster’s appearance.

In the first seven seconds of the video, the broadcaster is seen wearing a blue suit and is bald. In the last seconds, he is seen in a darker shade of blue suit, a red tie, and a generous amount of hair on a once-bald head.

The narrator’s tone had a consistent speed, neutral tone, and a robotic, precise enunciation — all typical of an AI-altered voice.

On June 20, the Nigerian armed forces, however, deployed at least 197 troops to the ECOWAS mission in the Gambia (ECOMIG).

VERDICT

There is no credible evidence to suggest that Nigeria deployed troops for a peace support mission in Israel.

TAGGED: Israel-Iran war
