FACT CHECK: AI-edited video of Peter Obi used to advertise investment platform

A video showing Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, purportedly advertising an investment platform called “AfriQuantumX” is trending online.

In the video, Obi was seen purportedly telling people to invest in the platform and get the sum of “7 million” every month.

The former LP presidential candidate purportedly said the investment platform was created with his backing and the support of the federal government.

“Enough is enough! Our people deserve financial freedom now. Every Nigerian must know this truth today. You can earn up to N7m every single month,” the voiceover in the video said.

“More than 10,000 of our people have already quit their jobs not because they are lazy but because they have found something better.

“They took early retirement and now live with dignity. All of this have been made possible by a new financial platform, AfriQuantumX, developed with my support, together with the Nigerian government.”

The video was posted by a page identified as “News24”.

The caption reads thus: “AfriQuantumX — an opportunity you cannot afford to miss! Start with just ₦400,000 and in 7 days you’ll have ₦2,000,000 in your account. This is not a promise, it’s the real result thousands of Nigerians are already getting. Spots are limited, registration will close soon — act now!”

VERIFICATION

A link was attached to the post. A click on the post opens to a website that resembles Channels Television, a national television station in Nigeria. The logo on the website does not lead to the home page.

The website has a video of Seun Okinbaloye, host of Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme, interviewing Obi.

The video was edited to appear as if Okinbaloye and Obi were talking about the investment platform.

Another clue showing that the video is not genuine is that Obi’s mouth region was blurred — a major indication that the video was AI-edited.

A closer observation of the mouth region depicts that there was an imposition.

When CableCheck analysed keyframes from the video on Google Lens, it was discovered that the original video was from Obi’s speech during the May 2017 edition of ‘The Platform Nigeria’ programme.

The Covenant Nation organised the programme to discuss political, economic, and social issues affecting Nigeria.

The original video is here.

The testimonials on the website were also AI-generated.

Search for the name “AfriQuantumX” on Google shows that GCB Bank, a financial institution in Ghana, had earlier released a statement distancing itself from the investment platform.

The Ghanaian bank said AfriQuantumX used the bank’s logo to advertise the investment platform.

“GCB Bank PLC wishes to alert customers and the general public that a circulating social media post advertising an investment named “AfriQuantumX” and purporting to come from GCB is fraudulent,” the statement reads..

“The post misuses the Bank’s logo, shows an unrelated video, and directs users to a non-GCB website.

“GCB has not launched any product by this name. The Bank advises the public not to click, not to share personal or banking details, and not to transfer funds in response to this post.”

The techniques deployed by the originators of “AfriQuantumX” investment platform are fraudulent and raise red flags.

VERDICT

The video showing Obi advertising an investment platform was AI-edited. The advertisement is intended to mislead the public.

TAGGED: AfriQuantumX, AI-edited video, peter obi
