DISINFO ALERT: This YouTube channel regularly publishes false claims about Nigerian celebrities

A YouTube page identified as Nigerian News is home to several videos containing false claims about famous Nigerian celebrities.

The page, which has over 3000 subscribers, focuses on celebrity marriages, their careers, alleged divorces, unproven health status, alleged paternity fraud, and deaths.

Findings by CableCheck showed that the page was created on August 21, 2025. Between then and now, Nigerian News has published about 55 videos, many of which are filled with falsehoods.

Most of the videos have clickbait captions such as “Genevieve Nnaji is now over 46 and her life is sad”; “At 68, Kwam 1 finally admitted what we suspected”; “At 78, Pete Edochie broke his silence and shocked the world”; and “Farewell to Segun Arinze whose death at the age of 59 shocked the world”.

The first video uploaded on the YouTube page claimed that Innocent Idibia, the Nigerian singer popularly known as 2face, had divorced Natasha Osawaru Idibia, the Edo state house of assembly member that he recently married. Different videos of the singer were merged into a montage to push the narrative, accompanied by a voice-over.

The narrator said the marriage lasted a year. However, Tuface and Natasha had their traditional wedding in July 2025, and the couple is still together.

LIKE 2BABA, LIKE OBEY

Earlier in September, the YouTube page claimed that Ebenezer Obey, the ace Nigerian Juju singer, had died at the age of 83.

“Chief Ebenezer Obey, the legendary Nigerian juju musician whose music has been a heartbeat of generations, whose voice carried Yoruba proverbs and timeless wisdom, whose guitar strings danced like whispers between the heavens and the earth has fallen silent forever at the age of 83,” the caption in the video said.

The video, which claimed that Obey died of a stroke, has amassed over 60,000 views with 421 likes.

However, some of the followers of the page took to the comment section to debunk the claim, with some saying the page should be flagged by YouTube for spreading fake news.

In a report by TheCable Lifestyle, Obey had dismissed the renewed rumours about his death.

Obey shared a video of himself singing ‘I Have A God Who Never Fails’ alongside his two sons.

He described the reports as “lies from the kingdom of darkness” and “the intention of the enemy”. He confirmed that he was alive, did not suffer a stroke, and was in good health.

OTHER CELEBRITY VICTIMS OF NIGERIAN NEWS

Some other celebrities mentioned on Nigerian News include King Sunny Ade, Ebele Okaro, Tiwa Savage, Uche Jombo, Omoni Oboli, Ini Edo, Desmond Elliot, and Clarion Chukwura.

On September 2, the YouTuber claimed that actor Kanayo O Kanayo had died at the age of 63. The page published a video of men carrying a casket from a cemetery.

The page tagged most of the videos with captions indicating that some of the “celebrities are sad with their current state of livelihood”.

A video was also posted, insinuating that Banky W recently found out that his two children with Adesua Etomi were not his biological children.

In another post, the YouTuber claimed that Joke Silva had just tied the knot with Olu Jacobs after decades of living together.

TELLTALE SIGNS

Further checks showed that the voiceover narrations used in Nigerian News videos are computer-generated, with some Nigerian names being mispronounced.

Also, some of the images and footage used in the videos are foreign.

For instance, Caucasians wearing suits and carrying a casket were used in the video about the rumoured death of Kanayo. The visual representations in the videos also do not match the subject or the background voice.

CableCheck also noticed that some of the videos had the same caption, while only the names of the celebrities differed.

Although there is a disclaimer on the YouTube page stating that the content is for “entertainment purposes” and “the information provided “may be inaccurate, outdated, or incomplete”, some of the videos still get as high as over 4,000 views.

Despite the disclaimer, some commentators still believe the falsehoods.

CableCheck has reached out to YouTube to report the page and its activities.
