A social media user has claimed that terrorists have set fire to a yam market located in Plateau state.

The claim posted by @CitizenObs on X has garnered over 5.8k likes, 309 quotes, 266 bookmarks, 460k views and 4.1k reposts.

“Fulani terrorists set fire to the yam market located in the Plateau state, Nigeria,” the post reads.

On Wednesday gunmen reportedly invaded and killed over 10 people in an attack on five communities in Bokkos LGA of the state.

The assailants were said to have invaded and destroyed houses in Mangor Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti and Tadai communities.

Caleb Mutfwang, governor of the state, condemned the attack, urging residents to “exercise restraint and refrain from taking the law into their own hands”.

VERIFYING THE CLAIM

CableCheck subjected the picture to a reverse image search using Google Lens which showed that it had been online since March 31, 2021.

The image was used when fire reportedly razed the popular Namu Central Yam Market on Qu’an Pan LGA of Plateau.

We also observed that no reputable media platform reported the claim.

VERDICT

The claim that terrorists recently set fire to a yam market in Plateau is false.
