A viral image of submerged houses caused by flooding is being shared online as the aftermath of the downpour that occured in Lagos on Wednesday.

The picture was posted by @orbitnews on Facebook,   with over 246 likes, 73 shares and 91 comments.

The picture was also seen here, here and here on X, with the caption “meanwhile in Ibeju Lekki” — an area on the Lagos Island.

On Wednesday, torrential rainfall left most parts of Lagos flooded as cars and houses were submerged underwater.

Residents began sharing photos of flood situation in their area while decrying the state of the drainages across the state.

The Lagos government, on Wednesday, said the flood was caused by rising lagoon level in the state, and urged residents to be calm.

Tokunbo Wahab, the state commissioner for environment and water resources, said the floods would abate once the rain subsides.

TheCable, after subjecting the picture to reverse image search, found that it was uploaded by Ou Travel and Tour on X to show communities that were flooded in Anambra state in 2022.

The picture was also used in news report to depict the Anambra flooding.

TheCable also found that the same image was linked to the flooding caused by the reopening of the Lagodo dam in the same year.

In summary, the viral image of submerged houses used to depict the flooding situation in Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos is an old image from 2022.

TAGGED: 2024 flood, Flood, Heavy rainfall, Lagos flooding, Misinfo alert, submerged houses
