FACT CHECK: Video of Nnamdi Kanu in bed with woman NOT connected to his arrest

On Wednesday, a video of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in bed with a woman began to circulate on the internet.

On Tuesday, Kanu was arrested and extradited to Nigeria to face trial after he jumped bail and fled the country in 2017. A news report had claimed that a Nigerian intelligence agency lured the IPOB leader with a woman from London, United Kingdom to a South American country, where he was captured.

Afterwards, a three-minute video of Kanu with a woman in bed started gaining momentum on social media platforms with the claim that it was the moment the IPOB leader was captured and arrested. The video shows Kanu in bed with a lady in a bikini.

While the location of the room is unknown, the conversation between the duo was intimate.

“Even when I make love to you, I pity you…. because you like complaining of pain and associated bruises,” Kanu said in the video.

“It is always standing,” the lady replied as she leaned towards the IPOB leader.

“You can never make love consistently, why? There is lovemaking on demand and some are not on demand. You don’t like love on-demand,” Kanu said.

Commenting on the development, a Twitter user identified as Sanvelly de violator, @sanvelly, also said Kanu was set up by a lady, an act he described as surprising.

“I heard it was a woman that was used to set up Nnamdi Kanu for arrest,” he wrote, in pidgin.

“I dey hear say na woman dem take set Nnamdi Kanu up for arrest. All I can say is, omoooooooo x100.”

Another user, @Esezobor7, wrote: “Leader of IPOB NNAMDI Kanu captured by Nigerian forces after being lured to a hotel by a beautiful woman. Guys take note ……when will we learn?”

HOW TRUE IS THIS CLAIM?

Checks by TheCable revealed that the viral video is not connected to Kanu’s arrest or extradition to Nigeria.

The lady in the video is Uchechi Okwu Kanu, the IPOB leader’s wife — and not a lady working with any security agency as claimed in some quarters.

The video had surfaced and resurfaced on the internet at different times, and one of such cases was in 2019 when it was uploaded on several blogs.

Within Nigeria, an online blog with over 84,000 followers on Instagram, shared the video on April 11, 2019 with the title “Most wanted man in Nigeria, Nnamdi Kanu, relaxing in bed with wife in UK”.

In a Twitter post on April 12, 2019, Kanu reacted to the viral video while showering accolades on his wife.

“When I repeatedly announced on radio that you are intoxicatingly beautiful, most didn’t quite understand. Now millions can bear me witness. Even after childbirth, as adorably divine as ever. In the end we always win.
#Biafra rocks!” he tweeted.

VERDICT: The video of Kanu in bed with a woman surfaced online in April 2019, over two years before he was extradited to Nigeria. The claim that the viral video is connected to the IPOB leader’s arrest is misleading.
