Toyin Abraham, the Nollywood actress

Some social media posts have alleged that Netflix has removed movies produced by Toyin Abraham, the Nollywood actress, from its platform.

On July 10, @KadunaResident, an X user, claimed that the streaming platform has taken down movies featuring Abraham.

“BREAKING: I heard Netflix has deleted all Toyin Abraham’s movies today? Comrades, please lower your weapon. Na person mama,” the user wrote.

The post has so far garnered over 636,000 views, 4,200 likes, and 808 reposts on X.

The post was also shared here and here.

BACKGROUND

Abraham is one of several celebrities who have faced backlash on social media for endorsing President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential elections.

The filmmaker was recently accused of getting a social media influencer identified as Big Ayo and his mother arrested over defamatory claims.

Ayo had alleged that Abraham received money from Tinubu to address her husband Kolawole Ajeyemi’s baldness.

“Mrs @toyin_abraham1 walai aiye e ti ta! You collect Tinubu money use do hair transplant for your husband. Stoppid fool,” the now-deleted post read.

In an Instagram live session on Wednesday, the actress denied the claim, saying she did not ask the police to arrest Ayo’s mother but instead reported the case to the cybercrime unit.

Abraham said she will not condone insults targeted at her children and vowed to take action against critics who bully her on social media.

Her remarks, however, got a lot of Nigerian X users infuriated, with some writing to streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video to take down her movies for alleged “abuse of power”.

A user shared a copy of his letter to Netflix and urged others to do the same. Others threatened to report Abraham’s social media accounts should Big Ayo not be released from police detention.

VERIFYING THE CLAIM

To fact-check the social media claim, TheCable searched Netflix to determine if movies produced by Abraham had been removed from the platform.

The search found that films featuring Abraham, such as ‘Ijakumo’, ‘Malaika’, ‘Prophetess’, ‘Elevator Baby’, and several more, remain available for streaming on Netflix.
